Ordinary People is a 1980 American drama film and the directorial debut of Robert Redford, adapted by Alvin Sargent from Judith Guest's 1976 novel of the same name. Starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, Judd Hirsch and Timothy Hutton, it follows the disintegration of a wealthy family in Lake Forest, Illinois after one son dies in an accident and the other attempts suicide. The film won four Academy Awards at the 53rd ceremony, including Best Picture, Best Director for Redford and Best Supporting Actor for Hutton, who at twenty was the award's youngest recipient.
