Guillermo del Toro Gomez is a Mexican filmmaker born in Guadalajara in 1964 who works as a director, producer, and screenwriter known for blending fairy tale, gothic, and horror elements with practical special effects. His Spanish language films Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone are among his most acclaimed work, and his English language film The Shape of Water won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2017 with del Toro winning Best Director. He has received three Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and two Golden Globes, and beyond directing he has created television series, co-authored novels, and produced animated projects including Trollhunters.
