James Cameron is a Canadian filmmaker and explorer born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, in 1954, recognized for combining cutting edge film technology with classical filmmaking technique. His films have grossed more than ten billion dollars worldwide, making him the second highest grossing film director of all time, through works including The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Aliens, Titanic, and the Avatar franchise. Titanic won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director in 1998. Cameron has received three Academy Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards, and beyond filmmaking he serves as a National Geographic explorer in residence, having completed the first solo descent to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 2012.
