YouTube is an American online video-sharing platform headquartered in San Bruno, California. It was founded in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, who first built the site as a video-based dating service before turning it into a place for uploading and sharing video of any kind. The first video, Karim nineteen-second clip filmed at the San Diego Zoo, was uploaded in April 2005. Google acquired YouTube in November 2006 for 1.65 billion dollars and has operated it as a subsidiary since, and the platform has grown into the leading destination for user-uploaded and creator video worldwide.
