The video sharing site founded by three former PayPal employees went live in 2005, its first upload the nineteen-second clip Me at the Zoo in April. By making video publishing free to anyone, YouTube created the creator economy and became the largest video platform in the world, acquired by Google in 2006.

The first video was uploaded on April 23, 2005. Titled Me at the zoo, it shows co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo and can still be viewed on the site.
