The American Broadcasting Company, ABC, began as a radio network in 1943 when businessman Edward Noble purchased the weaker of NBC two radio networks, the NBC Blue Network, for eight million dollars, launching it under the ABC name on 12 October 1943. ABC extended into television on 19 April 1948 and became one of the three traditional American television networks alongside NBC and CBS. It is now an American English language commercial broadcast network owned by the Walt Disney Company through its Disney Entertainment division.
