John Adams (teletext engineer)

Television Technology Pioneers

John Adams was the lead designer for video display units at Philips in the early 1970s. The lead of the Wikipedia article on teletext credits him with creating teletext in the United Kingdom, a system intended to provide closed captioning of television shows for the hearing impaired. Teletext sent pages of text and simple graphics hidden in the broadcast signal, and public services began with the BBC's Ceefax in 1974, offering news, weather and television schedules. The source lead gives no dates, birthplace or further biographical detail for Adams himself.
