Das Boot

World and International Narrative Cinema

Das Boot is a 1981 West German film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, adapted from Lothar-Gunther Buchheim's semi-autobiographical novel and following the crew of a German U-boat, U-96, through a harrowing patrol during the Battle of the Atlantic in the Second World War. The film alternates between the tedium of long stretches without contact and the terror of Allied depth-charge attacks, aiming for a physically and psychologically realistic account of submarine warfare rather than a conventional heroic war narrative. Das Boot received six Academy Award nominations, an unusually high total for a non-English-language film at the time, and it is widely regarded as one of the most authentic war films ever made about submarine combat.
