Memories of Murder is a 2003 South Korean film directed by Bong Joon-ho, dramatizing the real investigation into a series of rapes and murders that took place in Hwaseong in the late 1980s, South Korea's first confirmed serial killings, following two local detectives and a big city investigator sent to assist them as their inquiry repeatedly stalls and turns up wrongly accused suspects. The film is as much about the flawed, sometimes brutal methods of the police investigation itself as about the killer, and it ends without the resolution the real case lacked at the time. It became one of the most acclaimed South Korean films internationally, and its unsolved crime was reopened in 2019, sixteen years after the film's release, when DNA evidence identified a man named Lee Choon-jae as the killer.
