It Was Just an Accident

It Was Just an Accident, released in Persian as Yek tasadof-e sadeh and in French as Un simple accident, is a 2025 political thriller written and directed by Jafar Panahi, a co-production of Iran, France and Luxembourg made without permission from Iranian authorities. It follows a group of former Iranian political prisoners who confront a man one of them, an auto mechanic named Vahid, believes tortured them in detention; after Vahid abducts the man, the group seeks confirmation of his identity from fellow survivors and debates whether to take revenge as the situation draws in the man's own family. The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d'Or, and Rotten Tomatoes reported ninety eight percent of its critics' reviews as positive. At the Golden Globe Awards it became the first Iranian film nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama, Best Director and Best Screenplay, and it received Academy Award nominations for Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay.
