Cinema Paradiso is a 1988 Italian film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, following the friendship between a young boy nicknamed Toto and Alfredo, the elderly projectionist of his small Sicilian village's only cinema, told largely in flashback as the adult Toto, now a successful filmmaker, recalls his childhood after learning of Alfredo's death. The film is built around its affectionate portrayal of moviegoing itself as a communal ritual in postwar rural Italy, including censored kissing scenes that Alfredo secretly spliced together as a gift to the grown Toto. Cinema Paradiso won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and is widely regarded as one of the best known tributes to cinema within cinema itself.
