Fanny and Alexander

Fanny and Alexander is a 1982 Swedish film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, following two young siblings in a large theatrical family in early twentieth-century Uppsala whose warm, sensuous home life is upended when their widowed mother remarries a severe, punitive bishop. Told largely through the perceptions of the children, especially the imaginative Alexander, the film moves between richly decorated bourgeois comfort and the bishop's bare, disciplinarian household, contrasting the two as opposing visions of family life. Fanny and Alexander won four Academy Awards including Best Foreign Language Film, and Bergman announced it at the time as his farewell to theatrical feature filmmaking.
