La Strada

World and International Narrative Cinema

La Strada is a 1954 Italian drama directed by Federico Fellini, following Gelsomina, a simple young woman sold by her mother to Zampano, a brutish traveling strongman, and forced to join his itinerant road show. Their difficult and often cruel relationship forms the center of a film Fellini described as a complete catalogue of his own mythological world. It marked Fellini's decisive break from Italian neorealism toward a more personal, symbolic style, and it won the first Academy Award ever given for Best Foreign Language Film, in 1957.
