The White Ribbon

The White Ribbon, released in German as Das weisse Band, eine deutsche Kindergeschichte, is a 2009 mystery drama written and directed by Michael Haneke, a German production. Narrated by an elderly former schoolteacher, it is set in a fictitious Protestant village in northern Germany between July 1913 and the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, where a series of unexplained, violent incidents befall authority figures and vulnerable residents, and the film explores how religious puritanism, parental control and social hierarchy may cultivate the conditions for cruelty. Haneke has described the film as an examination of the roots of evil, whether religious or political. It won the Palme d'Or and the international critics' prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, two Academy Award nominations, and ten Lola awards at the German Film Awards.
