Marianne and Juliane

Marianne and Juliane is a 1981 West German drama written and directed by Margarethe von Trotta, starring Jutta Lampe and Barbara Sukowa as sisters, loosely inspired by the real sisters Christiane and Gudrun Ensslin. One sister pursues women's rights as a feminist journalist while the other joins a violent revolutionary group, and the film, told partly through childhood flashbacks, follows the surviving sister's attempt to understand her sibling's path after tragedy separates them. Von Trotta won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Lampe and Sukowa tied for the festival's Best Actress award.
