A Year of the Quiet Sun

A Year of the Quiet Sun is a 1984 Polish and West German romantic drama directed by Krzysztof Zanussi, starring Maja Komorowska and Scott Wilson. Set in Poland in 1946, it follows Emilia, a widow rebuilding her life after the war, and her tentative romance with Norman, an American soldier, complicated by her duty to care for her dying mother. After her mother's death Emilia gives up her own chance to emigrate so a friend can take her place, and Norman leaves for America alone. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and a Pasinetti Award, and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
