X-Men #1 is a comic book published by Marvel Comics in 1963, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, introducing a team of mutant superheroes led by Professor Charles Xavier and consisting of the founding lineup of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel and Iceman. The issue established mutation, rather than accident or alien origin, as the source of its heroes' powers, laying the groundwork for the mutant metaphor of feared and persecuted difference that became central to the franchise's long-running storytelling. X-Men #1 launched a comics franchise that grew into one of the best-selling and most widely adapted properties in American comics.
