The Falling Man

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

The Falling Man is a photograph taken by Associated Press photographer Richard Drew on September 11, 2001, capturing an unidentified man falling from the burning North Tower of the World Trade Center. The image was published in numerous American newspapers the following day but was quickly withdrawn from wide circulation after provoking strong public objection to its stark depiction of an individual's death, and the identity of the man photographed has never been officially confirmed. The Falling Man became a focal point for later debate among journalists, editors and critics over how, and whether, images of individual death on September 11 should be shown to the public.
