Words with Friends

Words with Friends is a 2009 multiplayer word game developed by the studio Newtoy, later acquired by Zynga, in which two players build words on a crossword style board in a format similar to, but not affiliated with, Scrabble. Its system for matching players with strangers turned it into a genuine social platform, credited with connections ranging from marriages to a documented case where an opponent's in game message alerted a player's spouse to a medical emergency. By 2017 it had become the most downloaded mobile game in the United States, ahead of contemporaries such as Pokemon Go.
