The Wind Rises is a 2013 Japanese animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki for Studio Ghibli, a fictionalized account of the life of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi, tracing his career from his university studies in the 1920s through his design of the Mitsubishi A5M fighter and the experimental Ka-14 aircraft that led to it, interwoven with a fictional romance drawn from a semi-autobiographical novel. The film presents its engineer protagonist's love of flight and elegant aircraft design largely apart from the military use his work was eventually put to, a choice that drew both praise for its formal beauty and criticism in Japan for sidestepping the aircraft's role in the Second World War. It became the highest grossing Japanese film of 2013 and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature; Miyazaki initially described it as his final film as a director.
