The Wind

The Wind is a 1928 American silent film directed by Victor Sjostrom and starring Lillian Gish, following a young woman who moves from Virginia to live with relatives on an isolated Texas ranch and struggles against both the region's relentless wind and unwanted advances from men around her, eventually killing an attacker in self defense. Released by MGM just as the film industry was converting to sound, it was one of the last major American silent films and was poorly received by contemporary critics, but it has since gained considerable prestige, with the Museum of Modern Art calling it an eloquent farewell to the silent medium. The film was added to the National Film Registry in 1993 and entered the public domain in 2024.
