The Mission (1986 film)

The Mission is a 1986 British film directed by Roland Joffe, starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons. Set in eighteenth century South America, it follows a Jesuit priest's efforts to convert the Guarani people and a former mercenary seeking redemption, whose mission is threatened when the Treaty of Madrid transfers their territory to Portugal, forcing a choice between peaceful acceptance and armed resistance. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for best cinematography, among seven Oscar nominations including best picture.
