The Handmaiden is a 2016 South Korean psychological thriller directed by Park Chan-wook, adapting Sarah Waters's novel Fingersmith and relocating its story from Victorian Britain to Japanese-occupied Korea, where a pickpocket is hired to help con a wealthy heiress out of her fortune by posing as her handmaiden. The scheme grows more complicated as deception gives way to genuine desire between the two women. It won the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language and is widely ranked among the strongest South Korean films of the twenty first century.
