The Go-Between is a 1971 British drama directed by Joseph Losey, starring Julie Christie, Alan Bates and Margaret Leighton. Set mainly in the summer of 1900, it follows twelve-year-old Leo Colston as he becomes an unwitting messenger between an aristocratic woman and the tenant farmer she is secretly involved with, exposing the psychologically destructive effects of rigid English class conventions. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival and later took four BAFTA awards, including supporting acting prizes for Fox and Leighton, and was named to the British Film Institute's list of the 100 best British films.
