The English Patient is a 1996 epic romantic war drama directed by Anthony Minghella, adapted from Michael Ondaatje's 1992 novel. Told through the flashbacks of a severely burned patient cared for by a nurse in postwar Italy, it centers on a love affair between a Hungarian cartographer and a married Englishwoman set against the Sahara desert and the Second World War. The film won nine Oscars at the 69th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Minghella.
