The Deer Hunter

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

The Deer Hunter is a 1978 American film directed by Michael Cimino, following a group of Pennsylvania steelworkers whose lives are shattered when three of them are captured and forced to play Russian roulette as prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. The film is structured around a wedding and hunting trip before the war and a wrenching return afterward, contrasting small town ritual with the war's psychological devastation. It won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, and is widely regarded as one of the most significant American films made about the Vietnam War.
