The Broadway Melody (1929 film)

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

The Broadway Melody is a 1929 American film directed by Harry Beaumont, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's first sound musical, following two vaudeville-performing sisters who travel to New York in pursuit of Broadway stardom, their ambitions complicated by a romantic rivalry over the same man. It was the first sound film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, following the largely silent Wings at the inaugural ceremony, and its commercial success helped establish and popularize the film musical as a genre in the early sound era.
