Super Smash Bros. (1999 video game)

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Super Smash Bros. is a 1999 platform fighting game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64, bringing together characters from across Nintendo's own franchises into head to head combat. Rather than depleting a health bar, players win by building up an opponent's damage percentage and then knocking them off the stage, a mechanic the game is credited with establishing for the whole platform fighter genre. The crossover concept and the knockback based combat it introduced became the foundation for a series that has since sold tens of millions of copies and built one of gaming's most active competitive communities.
