Super Mario Bros.

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Super Mario Bros. is a 1985 side-scrolling platform video game developed by Nintendo R&D4 and published by Nintendo, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System and, in different form, for arcades and the Famicom, in which the player guides the character Mario through a series of levels to rescue a captured princess. The game is frequently cited as one of the most influential video games ever made, helping to popularize the side-scrolling platform genre and serving as a system-selling title that played a central role in reviving the North American home video game market following its severe contraction in 1983. Super Mario Bros. sold more than 58 million copies across its various versions and established Mario as one of the most widely recognized characters in video game history.
