Super Mario 64

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Super Mario 64 is a 1996 platform video game developed and published by Nintendo as a launch title for the Nintendo 64, directed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi, in which the player guides Mario through open three-dimensional worlds accessed from paintings inside Princess Peach's castle to collect stars and rescue her from Bowser. The game established camera-control and free three-dimensional movement conventions, including an analog control stick and a player-adjustable camera, that became a standard reference point for three-dimensional platform and action games that followed it. Super Mario 64 is widely credited by critics and industry retrospectives as one of the most influential video games ever made for its role in defining three-dimensional game design.
