Sparrows

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Sparrows is a 1926 American silent film starring Mary Pickford as the eldest of a group of orphaned and abandoned children held in virtual captivity on a squalid Georgia baby farm run by an abusive proprietor, from which she eventually leads the children on an escape through a dangerous swamp. Made when Pickford was in her thirties playing a role considerably younger, the film departed from her frequent lighter comic vehicles into darker, more atmospheric territory, with cinematography praised for its fog laden, expressionistic swamp sequences. It is regarded by film historians as one of Pickford's most accomplished and unusual late silent films.
