Space Invaders

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Space Invaders is an arcade video game developed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in Japan by Taito in 1978, in which the player controls a laser cannon that moves along the bottom of the screen, firing upward at descending rows of alien invaders. The game's commercial success in Japan was substantial enough that it was widely reported, though later disputed as exaggerated, to have caused a national shortage of the 100-yen coins used in its arcade cabinets. Space Invaders is credited with helping move the video game industry from a novelty into a mass commercial medium, and it established several genre conventions, including a persistent high-score table, that became standard across later arcade games.
