Singin' in the Rain is a 1952 American musical comedy film directed by and starring Gene Kelly alongside co-director Stanley Donen, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Set during Hollywood's transition from silent films to synchronized-sound talkies in the late 1920s, the film follows a silent-film star navigating the industry's technical upheaval, using that history as the basis for its comedy and musical numbers. Though treated at the time of release as a routine MGM production, it has since come to be widely regarded as one of the greatest musical films ever made, ranked first on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest movie musicals, and was among the first films selected for the National Film Registry in 1989.
