Silent Hill (1999 video game)

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Silent Hill is a 1999 survival horror game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo's Team Silent and published by Konami for the PlayStation, in which Harry Mason searches a fog covered American town for his missing adopted daughter. Unlike earlier survival horror games built on pre-rendered backgrounds, it used real time three dimensional environments, and its developers used fog and darkness both to hide hardware limits and to build dread. The game moved the genre away from B movie style shocks toward a more psychological horror influenced by art house and Japanese horror cinema, sold more than two million copies, and was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
