Scarface (1983 film)

Scarface is a 1983 film directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone, a loose remake of the 1932 film of the same name, following Tony Montana, played by Al Pacino, a Cuban refugee who arrives in Miami during the 1980 Mariel boatlift and rises from petty criminal to a powerful and increasingly paranoid cocaine kingpin. Its graphic violence and profanity drew an X rating before being trimmed for an R, and its portrayal of excess, ambition and self-destruction was poorly received by critics on release but grew into one of the most widely quoted and culturally referenced crime films, particularly in hip-hop culture, in the decades after. Pacino's performance as Montana remains one of his most recognized roles.
