Sansho the Bailiff

Sansho the Bailiff is a 1954 Japanese period drama directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, set in eleventh century feudal Japan and following an aristocratic sister and brother who are sold into slavery after their father is exiled for defying a provincial governor. The film traces their suffering under the cruel estate steward Sansho and the brother's eventual path toward mercy and reunion. It won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the 1954 Venice Film Festival and is widely regarded, including by filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, as one of the greatest films ever made.
