Saturday Night Live is an American late-night live sketch comedy and variety television series that premiered on NBC on October 11, 1975, created by Lorne Michaels. Each episode is broadcast live, built around a rotating celebrity host and musical guest performing alongside a repertory cast in original sketches, political satire and news parody segments, a format that has continued with only incremental change across five decades. The show has received more Primetime Emmy nominations than any other television program in history, has served as a launching point for numerous performers who went on to prominent film and television careers, and its live sketches have repeatedly become a significant venue for topical political satire in American culture.

Why was Saturday Night Live first called NBC's Saturday Night?
The name Saturday Night Live belonged to a rival ABC show until NBC bought the rights after its 1976 cancellation.
The show premiered on October 11, 1975 under the title NBC's Saturday Night because the name Saturday Night Live was already in use by Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell on the rival network ABC. After that program was cancelled in 1976, NBC purchased the rights to the name and officially changed the show's title to Saturday Night Live at the start of its third season, 1977 to 1978.
