Akira Kurosawa's 1950 film, in which a crime in a forest is recounted in four irreconcilable versions. Its Golden Lion at Venice in 1951 opened Japanese cinema to the world, and its structure gave a name, the Rashomon effect, to the problem of contradictory eyewitness truth, cited far beyond film.
