Orphans of the Storm

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Orphans of the Storm is a 1921 American silent film directed by D. W. Griffith, starring real-life sisters Lillian and Dorothy Gish as two orphaned French sisters, one of them blind, who are separated and endangered amid the turmoil of the French Revolution. Griffith staged the film on the large physical scale established by his earlier The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance, including sequences depicting mob violence and street fighting during the Reign of Terror. Orphans of the Storm is regarded as one of Griffith's major spectacles and one of the last films to display the epic historical staging that defined his silent-era reputation.
