Lights Out is an American radio horror anthology series created by NBC staff writer Wyllis Cooper in 1934 and later developed further by writer-director Arch Oboler, presenting supernatural and macabre stories with unusually graphic sound effects for violence, mutilation and monstrous transformation. Oboler in particular became known for using everyday objects, such as cabbages crushed to suggest the sound of a body being crushed, to produce visceral effects that radio drama had rarely attempted before. Lights Out is widely regarded as a foundational work of American radio horror, establishing techniques and a taste for the graphic that later horror broadcasting drew on directly.
