Grizzly Man is a 2005 documentary directed by Werner Herzog, built substantially from over one hundred hours of video footage shot by amateur bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell during thirteen summers he spent living among wild grizzly bears in Alaska, before he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed by a bear in 2003. Herzog intercuts Treadwell's own footage with interviews with people who knew him and with his own narration, which openly questions Treadwell's romanticized view of nature as a benign force rather than an indifferent and dangerous one. Grizzly Man is widely regarded as one of Herzog's most acclaimed documentaries and a landmark study of the tension between human sentiment about wilderness and wilderness itself.
