Gimme Shelter

Documentary and Nonfiction Film

Gimme Shelter is a 1970 documentary directed by Albert Maysles, David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin, following the Rolling Stones' 1969 United States tour and culminating in the free concert at Altamont Speedway, where a member of the Hells Angels serving as security fatally stabbed an audience member, Meredith Hunter, in an incident captured on camera. Filmed largely in the direct cinema observational style, the documentary shows the band and its organizers reviewing the concert footage after the fact as they confront what had happened. Gimme Shelter is widely regarded as a landmark of rock-and-roll documentary filmmaking and is frequently cited as symbolically marking the end of the 1960s countercultural era.
