Metroid is a 1986 side-scrolling action-adventure video game developed and published by Nintendo, following bounty hunter Samus Aran through a nonlinear, interconnected alien world that requires backtracking to earlier areas as the player acquires new abilities. The game was notable at release for a twist ending revealing that the previously unnamed, armor-suited protagonist is a woman. Metroid is widely regarded as a landmark for pioneering the nonlinear, ability-gated exploration structure later termed Metroidvania, a portmanteau of Metroid and Castlevania.
