Mega Man is a 1987 platform game created by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System, in which a robot must defeat six Robot Masters to stop the scientist Dr. Wily's plan for world domination. The game let players choose the order in which they faced its bosses and rewarded each defeat with a new weapon, an approach later credited as an early example of the nonlinear level selection that open world and mission based games would build on. It established the gameplay and visual conventions that the long running Mega Man series would follow for decades afterward.
