Edward R. Murrow and producer Fred Friendly's CBS documentary series, broadcast from 1951 to 1958, brought the investigative rigor of Murrow's wartime radio reporting to television. Its most consequential broadcast, on 9 March 1954, used Senator Joseph McCarthy's own recorded words to challenge his anti-Communist investigations, a rare instance of a news program confronting a sitting senator directly, and is credited with helping turn public opinion against McCarthy's methods.
