Gran Turismo is a 1997 racing video game developed by Polyphony Digital and directed by Kazunori Yamauchi, released for the PlayStation and marketed with the tagline The Real Driving Simulator. It offered a large roster of licensed real-world cars from manufacturers around the world alongside a physics model far more detailed than the arcade-style racing games common at the time, letting players earn and tune cars across a career mode before racing them on both fictional and real-world tracks. It became one of the best-selling games on the original PlayStation and established a long-running franchise that continued to define console racing simulation in the decades that followed.
