Exorcist: The Beginning is a 2004 American supernatural horror film directed by Renny Harlin, a prequel to The Exorcist and the fourth film in its series. Stellan Skarsgard stars as a younger Father Merrin, whose faith has collapsed after his experiences in World War II, as he uncovers dark occurrences while working as an archaeologist in Kenya. The film was reworked by Morgan Creek Productions from Paul Schrader's nearly finished version, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, after studio executives judged that cut unlikely to succeed and wanted more overt scares.
