Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Earth is a 1930 Soviet silent film directed by Alexander Dovzhenko, known in its original Ukrainian and Russian as Zemlya, depicting conflict in a Ukrainian village between peasant farmers and a wealthy landowning family over the introduction of a collective farm's first tractor. Part of what is often called Dovzhenko's Ukraine trilogy alongside Zvenigora and Arsenal, the film is distinguished by its lyrical, painterly treatment of the land and rural life rather than straightforward political messaging, and it was controversial with Soviet authorities on release for what they read as an insufficiently doctrinaire treatment of collectivization. It is widely regarded by film historians as one of the great achievements of the late silent era.
