Days of Heaven is a 1978 American romantic period drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick, his second feature after Badlands, starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard and Linda Manz. Set in 1916, it follows two lovers who flee Chicago after an incident and travel to the Texas Panhandle to work harvesting crops, where Bill persuades Abby to claim the fortune of a dying farmer by tricking him into a sham marriage. Production, shot in Canada on a tight budget in 1976, went through a difficult two year edit in which Malick incorporated improvised narration from young actress Linda Manz to resolve structural problems with the film. Days of Heaven has been recognized as one of the most acclaimed films of its decade, celebrated in particular for its cinematography, and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2007.
