Nosferatu (1922 film)

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Nosferatu is a 1922 German silent film directed by F. W. Murnau, an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula with names and settings changed, following the vampire Count Orlok, played by Max Schreck, who preys on Thomas Hutter and his wife Ellen after Hutter travels to the count's Transylvanian castle to complete a real estate sale. Stoker's widow sued for copyright infringement and a court ordered every print destroyed, but enough copies survived in circulation to preserve the film, and Schreck's gaunt, rat-like, elongated portrayal of Orlok became one of the most influential images in horror cinema. It is widely regarded as one of the defining works of German Expressionist film.
